Coronation Street actor William Roache has admitted cheating on his first wife while giving evidence at Preston Crown Court.

Roache, who has played Ken Barlow since the soap opera started in 1960, has been giving evidence in his trial where he is accused of two rapes and four indecent assaults against five women aged 16 or under between 1965 and 1971.

Earlier in the day the star, from Cheshire, claims he never met any of the women who claim to have been indecently assaulted.

Later the actor told the court he cheated on his first wife, Anna Cropper, during the 1960s at a time he said their marriage was “disintegrating”.

However he said he was interested in relationships and not gratuitous sex.

Roache categorically denied knowing or having any involvement with any of the women he is alleged to have raped or indecently assaulted.

Ann White, prosecuting, said: “You took what you could when you could.”

But Roache insisted: “No, I didn’t.”

The defence case continues with members of the Coronation Street cast expected to take to the stand to defend their colleague.
