A burglar who ransacked a couple’s home when they were out at work has been jailed for more than two-and-a-half years.

David Spencer, 25, admitted forcing a window at the house in Coronation Way, Lancaster and was caught the following day with his £2,200 haul of stolen goods in a rucksack.

A judge at Preston Crown Court heard the break-in was his third domestic burglary in as many years. Under the “three strikes” rule he was sentenced to a mandatory three-year term, but with 20 per cent discount for pleading guilty.

Spencer, of Chatsworth Road, Morecambe, who had a “lengthy list” of more than 30 previous convictions, was told by Judge Andrew Woolman: “This was an untidy burglary with a degree of ransacking which no doubt upset the householders.

“You have a reasonably bad history of offending, but most importantly two previous dwelling house burglaries.”
