A violent thug has been jailed for more than 12 years for beating his partner with a bottle.
Cowardly James O’Neill attacked the woman in her bedroom at her home in Morecambe in September last year.
The 46-year-old knocked his girlfriend to the ground and hit her more than 20 times round the head with a beer bottle as she lay defenceless on the floor.
O’Neill then fled, leaving the terrified 51-year-old bleeding badly.
She managed to dial 999 to raise the alarm and O’Neill was later arrested.
O’Neill, of West End Road, Morecambe, appeared before Preston Crown Court charged with a section 18 wounding offence.
The court heard his ex-partner was recovering from her physical injuries but had been left terrified by the sustained attack on September 13 last year.
O’Neill was jailed for 12 years and eight months and banned from contacting his victim.
Speaking after the sentencing, Det Con Ian Cartwright of Lancashire police’s Public Protection Unit in Lancaster, welcomed the jail term handed out to O’Neill and warned other domestic abusers their behaviour would not be tolerated by the police or courts.
Det Con Cartwright said: “This was a vicious attack that left the victim fearing for her life.
“She is still suffering after the incident and, while most of her physical injuries are healing, she has found her confidence greatly shaken.
“Victims of domestic abuse should know that Lancashire Constabulary take this kind of crime very seriously.
“We will not only do all we can to bring an offender to justice but to provide help and support to the victim so that they can find the path away from their abusive situation.”
Victims of domestic abuse can contact police and the National Domestic Violence Helpline on 0808 2000 247.
