Bomb disposal experts were called to Rivington, near Chorley, yesterday.

A spokesman for Chorley Police said: “We’d like to reassure residents that this was a routine response to an old Second World War era ordnance shell, which had been unearthed on farm land.

“It has been expertly disposed and the lambs are safely back in their field.”

The beautiful countryside around Rivington Pike is a popular destination for day trips.
