Three months after a baby boy died in Preston, his cause of death remains a mystery.

Aiden Jonathan Gary Cairns, who was born on February 18 last year, was pronounced dead at the Royal Preston Hospital in March at the age of 13 months, prompting a murder probe.

Paramedics were called to a flat in Church Street at around 6.51am on March 22 to a report of a baby suffering a possible cardiac or respiratory problems after receiving a 999 call stating a 13-month-old was suffering breathing difficulties.

Aiden’s mother, Tasha Hough, 25, from Ribbleton, and father Liam Cairns, 25, who is understood to have lived at the flat but comes from the Grange area of the city, were questioned for 36 hours on suspicion of murder.

However no charges have been brought against either parent and both remain on police bail as police try to ascertain what caused Aiden’s death.

A post mortem into the tot’s death failed to establish a cause of death.

A Lancashire Police spokesman said further medical tests are now underway as the investigation continues.
