The raiders cut their way into the allotments overnight last week, breaking the locks off several sheds.

They then also forced open a large container, stealing a brush cutter, a hedge trimmer, a petrol mower and other items.

Police said the missing items were worth at least £2,000.

It is thought the raiders had a vehicle nearby to load the haul onto.

A spokesman for the allotments committee said around 10 huts appeared to have been broke into.

The thieves seemed organised and determined, the spokesman said.

She said the issue of security would be raised at the committee’s meeting on Wednesday night. She said: “We have had equipment stolen before, but nothing as organised as this.

“I don’t know what we can do – it’s difficult to put in CCTV without power. Maybe more lights? We will have to see what the committee thinks.”

She asked for anyone with any information to come forward.

Lancashire police have asked any witnesses to call 101 quoting 674 of March 29.
