Accident investigator says pensioner's car accelerated before hitting Leyland mum

A police officer has told jurors two tyre scuffs at an accident scene where a mum died show the car that hit her had accelerated.

PC Rick Harrison gave evidence at the trial of Ann Diggles, 81, of Dalehead Avenue, Leyland, who denies causing death by dangerous driving.

Julie Dean, 54, died after her car mounted the kerb in Sumner Street, Leyland, in July.

He said the marks appeared to have been caused by the spinning of the front wheels of the car, as if it had accelerated.

When asked by prosecutor Richard Archer if there was evidence it had come into contact with a pedestrian he replied: “Yes, there is a dent on the front bonnet.”

The defence argue an electrical issue caused the car to accelerate on its own.
