6-year-old boy seriously injured after being hit by suspected drink driver

A 6-year-old boy has suffered serious injuries after being hit by a van driver in Blackburn yesterday (Thursday, January 28).

Police say a 33-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink or drugs. He remains in custody this morning (Friday, January 29).

Emergency services rushed to the scene in Marlton Road after the young boy was knocked down by a Vauxhall Movano van at around 9.40pm.

The child suffered serious injuries and was taken to Manchester Children’s Hospital by ambulance. He remains in intensive care, but his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Police are now appealing for witnesses who might have seen the van and its driver shortly before the crash.

Sgt Craig Booth, of Tac Ops, said: "This collision resulted in some very serious injuries to a young child and I would appeal to anyone who saw the collision or the manner of driving of the van prior to the collision, or who has any information, CCTV or dashcam footage, to get in touch."
