POLICE were pelted with cans when they confronted a mob of 500 youths.
The trouble broke out in the Bank Hey Street and Victoria Street area of Blackpool town centre on Friday night.
Police were called at 9pm to a report of ‘disorder’ and came under fire from scores of yobs throwing missiles, including cans.
Three officers received minor injuries but were able to stay on duty.
The incident lasted for about an hour before police brought the situation under control.
A Lancashire police spokesman said: “Thankfully no-one was seriously injured. There will be extra police patrols throughout the remainder of the weekend and plans are in place for a heightened police presence in Blackpool next Friday to prevent any further disorder taking place.”
Twelve people aged between 13 and 22 were arrested for a variety of public order offences.
Det Sgt Mark Dickinson, of Blackpool Police, said: “We understand that this incident may have left people upset and frightened and we are determined to trace those responsible. This level of violence is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”
