Firefighters were called to the high rise apartment complex to free them at 2.08am, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Richard Edney said.

"We were told the lift was stuck between the second and third floor, and there were three people who had been stuck in the lift for over an hour," he said.

"We sent two fire engines from Preston. We got there and by 2.41am we had released them from the lift. They were all fine. There were no injuries and they did not need to be treated by paramedics or given first aid at all."
