Cream rises to the top for ice-cream maker Angela
Angela Stewart set up Cool Cow Ice Cream eight years ago – but has never entered a competition before.
Based at Old Holly Farm in Cabus Nook near Garstang, Angela is now hoping her already successful business will go from strength to strength.
Angela entered eight of her ice-cream flavours into a national competition – and won five awards!
As part of the Ice-Cream Alliance contest, Angela entered her raspberry pavlova, cookie and cream, chocolate and peanutty flavours, which all won diplomas, while her lemon sorbet won a diploma of merit.
Shehad dropped off the flavours at a centre in Warrington where a specialist team tested and rated them, but never expected to win anything.
“I have never entered any awards before because I am only a small business and I never thought I would have a chance up against all the major companies, so I was really chuffed to come out with five awards,” Angela said.
“I really didn’t expect to win anything.
“It’s quite an achievement. We were up against some big guns and you don’t expect someone small like me to win.”
Angela set up Cool Cow on her own in september 2007, based in a rented building at Old Holly Farm and using their milk.
“I used to work for another company and I realised there was a good profit in ice-cream and decided to set up a business myself,” she said.
“My ice-cream is all hand-made with local ingredients, and I want to stay that way.
“I am an artisan ice-cream maker and I like the creative side of it.”
Angela currently makes 30 different flavours, and sells her products to restaurants, hotels, ice-cream parlours and shops as well as to Old Holly Farm.
“My ambition is to have my own ice-cream parlour,” the 44-year-old said.
Angela lives in Lancaster with her builder husband Kevin, The couple have a son Josh, 24, and daughter Emily, 20.
Although Angela largely runs Cool Cow on her own, she also has help from Emily and from her mum Dot Procter.
“I literally do just about everything myself, although my mum helps a lot,” Angela said. “From the paperwork to making the ice-cream and doing the deliveries.
“Winning these awards has given me a bit of a boost.
“It has made me realise that I must be doing something right.”
