Cow rescued by fire crews after falling into Lancaster Canal

Fire crews from Lancaster and Morecambe stations were called out at 2.39pm to help the frantic calf after it became trapped in the canal in the Lancaster village of Slyne.

The cow had stumbled into the canal from an adjacent field off Folly Lane whilst grazing and was unable to climb back onto its pasture.

Firefighters entered the water and used their swift water rescue equipment to free the young cow and return it to dry land.

The cow did not suffer any injuries, said Morecambe fire crew, who shared a picture of the calf happily grazing with its herd again, next to one of its firefighters.

A fire service spokesman said: "Two fire engines from Morecambe and Lancaster attended an animal rescue incident on Folly Lane in Slyne.

"The incident involved a young cow that had become trapped in a canal. Firefighters rescued the animal using swift water rescue equipment.

"They were in attendance for approximately half an hour."
