Couple and dog rescued after becoming trapped in mud with rising tide on Morecambe beach

RNLI Morecambe and HM Coastguard rescued a couple and their dog trapped in mud up to their waist with a rising tide on Morecambe beach.

Lifeboat crews were called out at 12.21pm on Saturday, October 10 to assist HM Coastguard with a 'serious risk to life' incident.

Deputy Launch Authority Justin Mawtus authorised the launch of the inshore hovercraft under the command of Andy Wright.

Upon arrival at scene the hovercraft crew immediately worked alongside Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and the Coastguard in order to free the couple trapped.

They were battling against an incoming tide with water at one point rising to the waists of the trapped couple.

The tenacious efforts of the emergency services successfully freed them from the mud. #

They were transported by hovercraft back to the shore and handed over to the North West Ambulance Service paramedic crew.

Deputy Launch Authority Justin Mawtus said “This was a tremendous effort by all organisations involved in this joint multi agency rescue. The fast rising tide made this even more difficult and the need to act swiftly and decisively resulted in lives saved.”
