Lancashire County Council is teaming up with district councils to tackle single person council tax discount fraud.

The aim is to look at homes which claim to be occupied by just one person, and are therefore eligible for a 25 per cent council tax discount, to check if it is still applicable. This is typically worth around £250 each year.

County Coun David Borrow, deputy leader of Lancashire County Council, said: “Councils are keen to make sure that people get discounts they are rightly entitled to, while clamping down on incorrect claims. We want to protect the public purse from fraud and abuse. This is even more important at a time when all council budgets are being reduced.

“We need to collect every penny of council tax due, when councils across Lancashire are having to make millions of pounds in savings.”
