Company to attempt world record to mark hosting Tour of Britain

Clitheroe’s The Printed Cup Company in association with Cumbrian paper mill company James Cropper is hoping to manufacture the world’s largest paper cup and win a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

The cup will measure 4.5 metres tall by three metres wide and will be placed on the top of the Printed Cup Company’s factory roof in Clitheroe using a huge crane.

The giant cup will be a perfect scale model of the cups the company usually make. However it will be made of bright yellow paper, the traditional colour worn by the Tour’s winning cyclist.

It will take over a week to manufacture the giant cup and will need over 100 hours of intensive labour. Half the factory floor is even being cleared for its construction. Hundreds of normal sized yellow cups will also be handed out to the crowds who line up to watch the race on Monday. It’s the first time the company has taken on a challenge like this and normally produce a thousand bespoke paper cups in 24 hours for hundreds of companies across Europe. The cup will be placed on the roof using a crane just before the race starts. If it’s raining, the cup won’t last long so the organisers are hoping that the Guinness Book of World Records adjudicators arrive in time to give them the official title of The World’s Largest Paper Cup.

In accordance with the companies ethos, the giant cup will be recycled once the challenge has been completed.

Cumbrian company, James Cropper, the only company in the world to recycle paper cups, will be supplying over 100 metres of specially dyed yellow card to help the challenge.
