Chorley comedian Dave Spikey has been signed up to switch on a Lancashire town’s new-look Christmas lights.

The Whittle-le-Woods-based funnyman, best known for playing compere Jerry St Clair in Phoenix Nights, has been recruited by the Leyland Town Team as they overhaul the town’s festive offering on Saturday, November 28.

“This year is going to be bigger and better than ever, it’s going to put Leyland back on the map.”

Martin Carlin

Martin Carlin, spokesman for the town team, a group of local business and community groups, said: “Leyland’s lights were poor, they got slated every year, so we decided to do something about it.

“We started to raise money and since June, with a lot of hard work, have managed to raise more than £4,000.

“South Ribble Council donated Then and Now calendars to us and we’ve been able to keep the proceeds, we’ve done bag packing, gone in for every grant going, and the Leyland Forum have donated money too.

“This year is going to be bigger and better than ever, it’s going to put Leyland back on the map.”

The team has arranged for one small and six large trees to be decorated by the team behind Blackpool Illuminations.

There will be a grotto, stalls of all kinds along Hough Lane, street entertainment, a snow machine, a stage, performances from several singers and bands, and the switch-on at 5pm.

Martin has also promised a special surprise to be revealed on the day.

He added: “It’s going to be a big, big event and Dave Spikey is happy to be involved.

“This is just the beginning of something of something really good for Leyland, and we want to build on it year on year.

“Lots of effort has gone into it and we’ve got to say a big thank you to the council and Leyland Forum.

“This is the community coming together for the good of the town.”
