The 17-year-old from Nelson was the last singer to take to the stage of the prime time talent show and wowed both the studio audience and the celebrity judges with her performance of Duran Duran’s 1993 release Ordinary World.

Her mentor, Culture Club star Boy George put her straight through to next week’s show after describing her rendition as “amazing” but added that, in the live show the sound had come across as “a bit messy but it was still great”, a comment backed up by fellow judge Will-i-Am who said the experience would make her stronger as an artist.

There was also praise for Cody from judges Ricky Wilson, who said she was his “favourite girl left in the competition”, while Paloma Faith told presenter Emma Willis that she had been a fan of Cody’s from the beginning of the programme.

TV audiences saw Cody at home in Nelson and at work in a local rock bar, where her boss Lisa described her as “fantastic with customers” and added: “She’s such a sweet girl and everyone loves her.”

Cody explained how her family are behind her and “constantly watching her performances”. “I couldn’t ask for a better family,” she said.

Cody, who was left speechless at the news that she would sing with her mentor next week said of him: “he’s not only a coach but your friend. He’s so cool.”

“It’s been really good. We get more time with him now obviously so it’s been a lot of fun.

“He even let me wear his hat which was a real honour. He’s been lovely.”

Former Liberty X singer Kevin Simm is in second place in terms of the betting, with odds of 7/2.
