The picture was snapped at Asda in Chorley on Tuesday, May 24, and had sparked criticism on social media, with one user saying ‘it’s one rule for them and another for us’.

But now police have hit back saying they were responding to a ‘domestic incident’ at the time.

A police spokesman said that officers received a report of a domestic incident involving a man and woman in Aldi carpark at around 4pm.

He said: “The couple had left prior to police arrival and were traced to Asda carpark shortly afterwards.

“Officers attended and spoke to the couple before the man became violent towards them.”

Officers had to use Pava spray on the man before he was eventually arrested on suspicion of assault.
