Chefs to take part in cooking contest at college open night

A Ready, Steady, Cook contest will be held at the opening of a Lancashire school’s new refectory tomorrow night.

Chefs from Michelin starred restaurants across the county will take part in the challenge at Stonyhurst College in Clitheroe from 7.30pm.

Paul Heathcote and Lisa Allen will create sumptuous dishes before an audience of parents, pupils and staff at the school in the new dining facility, assisted by the head boy and head girl.

The event will be hosted by Northcote Manor’s Craig Bancroft.

The winning chef will be declared in the time-honoured fashion, with a show of red tomatoes and green pepper cards from the audience.

The new refectory has been designed by Preston architects Cassidy and Ashton and will overlook the recently completed Weld House sixth form accommodation which they also designed. Throughout, consultation has taken place with English Heritage, who describe the design as “quietly modern - standing as an obvious addition to the complex without competing with the more historic elements.”

The new dining area can seat 320 people and has state-of-the-art kitchen facilities.

Stonyhurst’s former dining room was built in 1970 and had become too small to serve the 21st century needs of the College. Before that, pupils ate in the Top Ref, the original Great Hall of the private house which became the school.

The glass front of the new refectory has opened up beautiful views across the western approach to Stonyhurst and has created a light and spacious dining environment for students.
