All packed up with nowhere to go, Walmer Bridge-based charity Friends of Mulanje Orphans (FOMO) needs help to get on the move.
The charity is ready to ship its latest consignment of donated goods to Malawi, but the shipping agent which has transported a 45ft container in the past has closed its depot.
The charity stores container items in a unit on a Preston industrial estate, but this space is now needed for a new tenant.
Charity founder Mary Woodworth said: “We are very appreciative of all the shipping company has done for us over the last eight years transporting a huge range of items to where they are so badly needed. We have been offered another storage unit, but it is smaller that our current one which is now almost full. That’s why we are desperate to get the goods on the move.”
The charity runs a daily feeding programme for nearly 5,000 orphans in Malawi’s Mulanje district, where Mary grew up.
Mary added: “Inflation is now 26 per cent and food prices are soaring, so we are having to spend more and more on the rice, peas and beans to feed the children.
“We can afford to hire a container, but the shipping costs – around £8,000, are beyond us. That’s why we are appealing to anyone, company or individual, to help us.”
