The incident caused long tailbacks and has led one angry resident to call for HGV vehicles to be banned from country roads.

The cross roads have long been the subject of controversy and hopes to be filtered with the introduction of the Broughton bypass.

Resident John Brennand said: “It is time that the authorities realised that Woodplumpton Lane, and certainly Whittingham Lane, are not suitable routes for HGV’s with their new monster length trailers.

“A restriction on them should be applied forcing them to use a much more suitable route through Grimsargh when travelling to, and from, their HGV depot at Longridge to exit and access the M6 motorway.”
