Champion girl guider Megan nominated for prestigious award

An Adlington teenager has been shortlisted for one of the county's most prestigious community awards after dedicating her spare time to supporting her neighbourhood.

Girl guide leader Megan Whalley, 13, has been nominated for the High Sheriff of Lancashire Young Citizen of the Year award for her volunteering and charity efforts with the 2nd Adlington St. Paul’s Guides and the Friends of Adlington Library.

Unit leader Katie-Louise Allen submitted a nomination in recognition of the St Michael’s High School pupil inspirational role within the group and for her dedication and enthusiasm in helping to raise nearly £1,000 with her friend Niamh McMoran-Elliot for the Adlington Library fund.

Katie said: “Megan is a wonderful, hard working and dedicated young lady who shows excellent commitment to guiding each week.

“Megan is a patrol leader after being elected for this role by her peers. She is a fantastic patrol leader and is a true Girl Guide, always putting others first, giving everything 100% effort and dedication and being kind to all. She is a fantastic role model to the other guides.”

Last year Megan, also a member of Chorley athletic and triathlon club, and Niamh organised a sponsored ‘lazy triathlon’ event to help save the library, swimming 100 lengths of Chorley pool, hiking 10 times up and down Rivington Pike and completing four-hour cycle ride.

Katie added: “Megan’s actions have meant the Adlington library will no longer be closed and will continue to provide our community with educational support and recreational activities.

“This has had a huge impact on our community who will now continue to use these services and be eternally grateful to all the work she put in.”

The annual awards ceremony will take place on Thursday March 23 at Lancashire Police Headquarters in Hutton.

Winners and runners up will be selected by the Lancashire High Sheriff John Barnett MBE DL and a panel of judges which will include representatives from the Lancashire Partnership Against Crime (LANPAC), Lancashire Constabulary, UCLAN and Rodney Swarbrick CBE DL, a former High Sheriff who initiated the awards scheme.

The winner will be presented with £500 along with a specially commissioned trophy and certificate from the High Sheriff and Chief Constable Steve Finnigan.
