Catholic College's final class to be reunited at 50

They were in a class of their own, quite literally, as the final intake at the historic Preston Catholic College.

Now one ex-pupil is trying to organise an autumn reunion as the boys all hit their 50th birthdays. Jim Clune is on a mission to get the class of ‘77 back together to mark the special milestone in their lives.

“We were the last class before they closed the school, so it’s a special group,” said ex-police officer Jim, who now lives in Hertfordshire.

“When we reached the second form there was no first form below us and so on throughout our time there. By the time we were in the fifth form we were the only group left, apart from the sixth form.”

Preston Catholic College opened in Mount Pleasant 1865 and moved to Winckley Square in 1879. Over the next century it expanded down the west side of the square. At its peak in 1970 it had 915 pupils on roll. It closed in 1984 and merged into Newman College.

“It was such an unusual set of circumstances for our year,” added Jim, who is 50 in June.
