The occupants had got out safely but the fire had engulfed the vehicle, which contained a propane gas bottle.

Police closed the northbound carriageways and firefighters from Carnforth and Lancaster equipped with breathing apparatus used a hosereel jet with foam injected in the water to extinguish the fire.

Earlier on Saturday crews from Morecambe had been called out to a caravan blaze in Carnforth.

The fire is believed to have been started deliberately.
