Plans have been unveiled for a new mixed retail and gym development in Preston which developers claim could generate a jobs boost.

Preston-based architects Cassidy and Ashton have applied for planning permission to develop vacant land off Eastway, Fulwood, on behalf of an unnamed client.

The firm says it could create hundreds of jobs and enhance retail provision in the city.

It is now looking for firms to become involved in the project.

Negotiations are currently underway with several well-known retail and gym chains who are interested in locating to the site.

Consultants Your Shout are promoting the plan on behalf of the applicants.

A spokesman said the scheme would help to enhance Preston’s retail offer to the north of the city without harming existing city centre stores.

The spokesman said: “The development at Eastway is an exciting opportunity which will bring into use a vacant development site by creating local employment for the people of Preston and enhancing retail provision in the north of the City.

“We would encourage all residents who are interested in new employment opportunities to sign up on our website where we can pass on their details to the future retailers at the site.”

Residents are being encouraged to visit to register their interest in future employment opportunities and also to find out more about the proposals.

The proposed site is at a busy junction opposite the Lancashire Evening Post’s offices, with access for vehicles via Oliver’s Place.

The area is already noted for traffic congestion.

Your Shout said sufficient parking would be provided on site that would meet all motorists’ needs as well as that of cyclists and motorcyclists.
