Planners are expected to turn down the latest plans to regenerate Morecambe’s promenade.

The Central Promenade scheme, submitted by North West property group Urban Splash, is due to go before the planning committee at Lancaster City Council on Monday.

The application for the 18.5-acre site alongside the Midland Hotel is recommended for refusal.

It includes new retail and leisure units, a hotel, restaurants and commercial space alongside a boardwalk and improvements to public spaces.

In the report due to go before the committee, the council’s planning officers said: “The authority is of the opinion the scheme proposed is no longer viable and that it cannot guarantee deliverability of the scheme in full.

“There is substantial doubt whether the public benefits can be delivered to outweigh the adverse impacts to the Midland Hotel and the wider conservation area.”

The application is the latest version of the development submitted by Urban Splash, which also reopened the art deco, Midland Hotel.
