An impressive 98 per cent of all establishments are currently rated between three and five stars – the sought rating for all businesses.
Only one business – Sylhet Bangla in Liverpool Road, Hutton – carries a zero star rating, after being told by inspectors last December that it needs ‘major improvement’ in its hygienic food handling and management of food safety.
Overall, nine of the 514 inspected businesses in the borough have been told they needed some kind of improvement, with three of them on the same road in Leyland.
One business – Pizza Costa in Clifton Parade, Farington – has closed since its inspection for reasons unrelated to its hygiene score, leaving eight active businesses in the borough told to improve their act.
The numbers mark a slight rise in the overall number told to improve, with only six last year not meeting the three to five star rating.
Coun Colin Clark, deputy leader of the council, said: “Ninety-eight per cent of food businesses in South Ribble are currently rated as ‘generally acceptable’, ‘good’, or ‘very good’.
“That equates to over 500 businesses that have shown they comply with food safety and hygiene regulations.
“This is a really positive result for South Ribble and I’m encouraged by the number of business owners who are taking food hygiene seriously.
“For our residents, the five-star hygiene rating system is a really important factor in making choices as a paying customer.
“I would always urge people to look up a restaurant or takeaway’s food rating – and make sure that they are displaying it clearly in their front window.
“Seeing a good rating is a reassuring sign that the business cares about its customers, its quality, and its standards.
“Where a business is failing to comply – receiving zero, one, or two stars out of five – we would always look to help them improve and offer them all the guidance and support they need in order to reach the accepted standard.”
The Post attempted to contact the premises of all zero and one star rated businesses but got no response.
