Chorley Council say road works have impacted the new units

Questions are being asked about why three business units created as part of a £300,000 revamp are still empty.

Calls are being made to Chorley Council to find out the reason as to why the units at the former McDonald’s site in Market Street remain empty.

The council spent £350,000 revamping the area and created three retail units and a kiosk.

Bubble ‘n’ Shake milkshake bar currently occupies the kiosk and a beauty shop is expected to move into a unit soon. But Chorley Council bosses say road works in Market Street have impacted the sale of the units.

Former councillor Peter Malpas said: “Be under no illusion, Chorley Council has been marketing these units not just since completion, but for just short of eighteen months.

“I want to see these units occupied with thriving businesses, both as a taxpayer and someone who has worked in retail. But as each day passes it’s becoming more and more obvious that the decision to re-build retail shops instead of any other number of options, was built on someone’s hunch and a hope.”

Coun Peter Wilson, deputy leader of Chorley Council, said: “It has been frustrating seeing these units empty for so long, especially after there was so much interest expressed when the site was being redeveloped. It has been disappointing that some of those businesses who expressed an interest at first, later pulled out. However, Bubble ‘n’ Shake opened up and is proving successful, and Flame Nails and Beauty have now submitted a planning application for the two story unit as they are seeking to expand their business. There has of course recently been the disruption from the street works on Market Street which is bound to have had an effect, but that work is now well under way and it’s looking great, and people can see that.

“This has led to a recent surge of interest from potential retailers, so we are now working with them to go forward.

“However, even though the units are currently empty, it’s much better than having the derelict, unsightly building that had been a blot on the landscape of that part of town for many years and as we let the units, they will bring in income for the council that we can spend on services for people.”
