The principal of Preston College has said businesses entering Lancashire’s biggest prize-giving are the “bedrock” of the county’s economy.

Lis Smith, who is also the college’s chief executive, confirmed it had renewed its sponsorsing of the Employer of the Year award at the annual Be Inspired Busines Awards (BIBAs).

The event’s organisers, the North and Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce, confirmed there had already been “strong interest” in the awards’ 16 categories.

The awards, along with the lifetime achievement, Lancastrian of the Year, will be handed out at a prize-giving in September.

Lis Smith said: “The BIBAs are seen as a natural part of our overall support for local businesses and reflects our obligation in recognising the many great employers out there.

“We recognise that people are the bedrock of any business and we must ensure they have the necessary skills required for the future.

“At Preston College our highly-acclaimed apprenticeship training schemes demonstrate our commitment to enhancing the skills and employability of our workforce, alongside the innovative workplace learning solutions we deliver.

“Investing in training and development can only help to realise the full potential of our employees, this benefits both our business and the skills base within Lancashire.”

The BIBAs are now open for applications with a deadline of 5pm on Friday, March 29.
