One of Preston’s most popular nightclubs has been shut down by a judge following a catalogue of violent incidents in the street outside.
Police were granted a closure order putting the shutters up on Macs Bar in Friargate for the next three months and prompting a review of its licence by the city council.
District Judge Jane Goodwin ruled on Tuesday that the bar had not done enough to control the drunken behaviour of revellers when they left the premises, sometimes as late as 5.30am.
“The safety of the public would remain at risk if the premises were allowed to remain open,” she told owner Andy McDonald.
Mr McDonald had claimed closure of his bar would be “catstrophic,” with more than 100 full-time and part-time staff losing their jobs.
