WRESTLING fans will be heading to Preston for another star-studded free-for-all this summer.

Big name grapplers have been booked for the city’s second outdoor ring-fest on the Flag Market on Saturday July 11.

Last year the free event – part of the city’s Armed Forces Day commemoration – proved a knockout with an estimated audience of around 4,000. This time organisers are hoping to double that.

“Our target is 6,000, but judging by the huge names who have been booked, it is possible we could get even 8,000,” said Steven Fludder, founder of Preston City Wrestling. “To draw a musical comparison, if last year’s bill had the equivalent of X-Factor finalists, this time it’s the level of a Madonna or a Gary Barlow.”

Topping the bill will be stars of the quality of Team 3D (the Dudley Boys), Velvet Sky and Chris Mas. They are the first names to be announced and will be supported by some of the most popular PCW roster members from regular sell-out promotions at the Evoque venue in Church Street.

“It will be a great bill,” said Steven. “And it’s all for free. While there will be two or three rows of paid-for ringside seats, everyone else can just walk up and watch for nothing.

“It was a format which proved very successful last summer, with people coming from all over the UK and the Continent just to watch. We are expecting it will be even more of an attraction this time.

“It is great to be part of Armed Forces Day in Preston. That pulls in a huge audience on its own, so a few thousand more coming for the wrestling means the city centre will be absolutely buzzing.”
