Bids open for iconic Tower of London poppy fund-raiser

An iconic Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red poppy which was displayed on the Tower of London can now be bought from Garstang Youth Council.

The council has also joined up with Dig In to plant flowers at the town’s war memorial.

The money will go to Garstang British Legion, women’s section, with the bidding starting at £30.

The other of the two which was purchased is now on display in the town’s Market Hall window.

Sealed bids should be sent to Lynn Harter, Bridgefield, Kepple Lane, Garstang, PR3 1PB, before December 1 and you must mark your envelope with the word BID. The poppy will then go to the highest bidder.

Dig In is a North West team made up of the military community, both serving and veterans, who work in gardens to help each other through tough times.

And the group has donated a planter for the youth council to look after ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

The youth counil has had a busy month as it also held its annual general meeting.

The chains of the youth mayor were handed over in the town’s council offices in front of a packed crowd of people from the community and dignitaries.

Former youth mayor – 14-year-old Oliver Atkinson – handed over his chains to the new youth mayor Myles Sutcliffe.

Mayor of Garstang, Lynn Harter described Oliver’s year as mayor as “very successful” and along with his fellow councillors raised £718 for his chosen mayoral charity Kepple Lane Park Trust.

The trust is working towards developing Kepple Lane Park into a multi-use area for all the family.

Myles will hope for an equally successful year and declared his charity would be the ADAM appeal, which aims to raise funds to provide cardiac defibrillators and raises awareness of cardiac risk to young people.

The event also saw the presentation of the Young Citizen of the Year Award. The Lady Atkins Senior Trophy went to Oliver Atkinson who was nominated by his headteacher Phil Birch from Garstang Community Academy.

It was presented to him by the mayor of Wyre, coun Tom Balmain. The Carr’s Junior Trophy, went to Declan Stephen, who was nominated by his headteacher Helen Ife, from Garstang St Thomas’ Primary School.

The youth council also awarded their own citizen trophy to Garstang Town Council clerk Edwina Parry and a bravery award to three-year-old Pippa Cole, from Garstang, who has been diagnosed with a aggressive brain cancer.
