Woman ‘found dead at Preston bus station’

The iconic Grade II listed building has been the scene of many deaths over the years, leading to calls for the top level of the multi-storey carpark to be fenced off.

Now work already scheduled is under way at the bus station site.

It is understood that all of the carpark floors will have fencing fitted.

A spokesperson for owners Lancashire County Council said: “It’s sad to hear about this incident at the bus station over the weekend.

“We pass on our condolences to her family and friends.

“As part of the redevelopment of the bus station, we’ve planned to add measures to reduce the chance of incidents from happening in the future, this includes measures on all floors.

“The measures are being introduced as part of the concrete repairs and other refurbishment work to the car park levels.”

Officers were called to the bus station at 5.20pm on Saturday amid reports the woman had fallen from the roof of the station’s car park.

“Emergency services attended and found the body of a woman thought to be in her 60s close to the central bus station,” a spokeswoman for Lancashire Police said in a statement.

“She has yet to be identified, however her death is not being treated as suspicious. A post mortem examination will be carried out in due course.”

In September, a 49-year-old woman died after falling from the top of the controversial building, leading to calls for the top level of the car park to be fenced off to deter others.

The bus station is being given a major refurbishment and will also be the site of the city’s new Youth Zone project.
