Barber shop offered 50p haircuts to'¨show it's still a cut above 50 years on
Bill Shankley to Sir Tom Finney were just some of the famous names, amongst generations of young people to have visited this barber shop in the heart of Preston, and asked for a short, back and sides.
The barber chairs marked ‘Made in Lancashire’ have been part of the furniture since the original shop opened 50 years ago and Marc Johnston, owner of Johnsty’s Barber Shop in Moor Street says it was only right they celebrate the milestone.
So inviting all those loyal and new customers who have gone under his scissors and clippers to join the celebrations, Marc opened the doors for a day of 50p haircuts in tribute to the previous family owners of the barber shop formerly F.Smith’s Gentlemen’s Hairdressers, known affectionately as Fast Frank’s.
Stylist Holly Church who works alongside Marc said: “We still have the original price lists on the wall with the 50p hair cuts so 50p for 50 years was just fitting for the day.”
However, the day was such an overiding success the pair ended up giving away most of the hair cuts for free, Marc added: “We made about a fiver each, working from 8.30am through to 4.30pm
“I’d been saving up all these 50p coins for change expecting people to come with a quid and instead they were all paying with 20 pound notes but it was just a really great day - such a good atmosphere
“And humbling just to see how many people turned out, just popping in for a beer and a slice of cake - for a small business to have that support is just great.
“It was a worry there would be no one turning up on the day, we were packed from opening until in the end I was having to send people home!”
The birthday celebrations were followed up with an after party event at the Aldelphi Pub.
Marc who himself has been in the business 26 years took over the shop in 1999.
Following a recent investment, he is now looking for a new member to join the team
