Baby Dean arrives early - in pal's car

Baby Dean Currey was in such a rush to arrive in the world that he didn't even want to wait until his mum arrived at the hospital.

Instead, he decided to make an entrance two weeks early in the car, as it drove around Lancaster’s Pointer roundabout.

Mum Vicki Davis, from Morecambe, managed to deliver Dean while squashed in the front passenger seat of a tiny Toyota Yaris after her sudden labour during Friday morning’s rush hour.

Vicki, 27, was being driven to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary by best friend Amanda Bray. In the back seat were Vicki’s partner Dan Currey, her nine-year-old daughter Lilly and Amanda’s nine-month-old baby Aurora.

Amanda, 23, said: “As we got near the roundabout Vicki said she needed to push and I looked over and could see the baby’s head coming out.

“She was trying to stop him but as we went onto the roundabout he just came out completely. I had to pull Vicki’s leggings down to help him out.

“We got to the hospital and they were waiting for us with a wheelchair and we just told them it was too late!

“The staff were brilliant and got straight into the car to make sure they were both OK.

“They looked after us all really well, they were fantastic.

“I couldn’t believe how good Vicki was. She had no pain relief and was in a tiny car. To see her cope so well with it was really nice to be a part of. Going through what we did has really cemented our friendship too.”

Vicki said: “I can’t really remember much of it. It was all very surreal.

“I wasn’t scared because I just didn’t have enough time to be in pain or to think about it.”

Amanda added that Vicki’s daughter Lilly also managed to remain extremely calm under the stressful circumstances.

“Lilly was brilliant,” she said. “She’s only nine and she looked after my baby in the back seat.”

Dean was two weeks’ early when he arrived at around 8.33am, weighing in at a healthy 6lb 10oz. But midwives were so happy with his health that both mum and baby were back home by 3pm.

Baby Dean – Vicki’s request to name him Yaris wasn’t allowed! – has been given Oliver as a middle name after Amanda’s husband Oliver Bray, who is also Dan’s best friend.

“We have a great story about his birth to tell him on his 18th birthday,” Vicki said.
