Average speed cameras to go live

The cameras installed along a four-mile stretch of the A565 - Southport Road - through Mere Brow and towards Tarleton will be active from Thursday, August 10.

The Lancashire Road Safety Partnership (LRSP) gave the go ahead for the scheme last year and in January announced chosen routes in a bid to reduce road casualties and collisions.

The cameras will use number plate recognition technology to detect vehicles and calculate their average speed by measuring the time taken to travel between fixed points.

Those breaking the 50mph limit will face fixed penalty fines of £100 and three points.

The LRSP opted to adopt the average speed camera system as evidence has shown it has a positive impact on a variety of road types across other parts of the country, a spokesman for Lancashire Police said.
