The cyclist had apparently gone onto the motorway on his push bike to get his daily exercise.

Police said he had been using the inside lane of the motorway, between junctions 4 and 5 between Orrell and Skelmersdale, causing a driver to swerve around him.

Lancashire Road Police tweeted a picture of the offender.

They said: "It's been a busy set of shifts for us but one surreal incident this week has been this chap.

"He had been taking his daily exercise in Lane 1 of the M58 causing 2 cars to crash around him & somehow avoided being wiped out himself. Stay safe."

Police added later that the man moved out into Lane 1, causing a car in Lane 1 to swerve to Lane 2 into the path of a van.

One observer said on social media: "No way - complete madness!"

As incredulous Twitter users asked if the cyclist was drunk or on drugs, police replied:

"Not impaired or intoxicated, and was escorted off the motorway with a fine in his pocket and a huge lesson in road safety."
