£3.5m facelift to give town a tree-mendous new look

Planning applications underpinning an impressive regeneration project have now been given the green light – meaning work could start within months.

The centre of the town will become a tree-lined avenue with a striking public garden.

There will be a major upgrade to Station Road, with wider footpaths, enhanced crossings and improved parking, both outside the shops and a greater long-stay provision.

A landmark “one of a kind” ornamental tree, made from different metals, will form the focal point, changing colour as it weathers. The scheme has been made possible with funding from the Preston, South Ribble and Lancashire City Deal which will see a huge cash injection for South Ribble and Preston over the next 10 years.

Coun Phil Smith, South Ribble cabinet member for regeneration and leisure, said: “Bamber Bridge has never seen investment like this and it’s an incredibly exciting time for residents and businesses. It will transform the centre of the town and give it an identity to be proud of.”

A welcome sign, similar in appearance to the iconic Lostock Hall War Memorial will be erected at the junction of Station Road and Lostock Lane. The railway station will be revamped and new bus shelters will form an interchange.

The works, designed to be dementia friendly with upgraded signage, a sensory garden and seating, will form a blueprint for regeneration projects announced for Penwortham, Leyland and Lostock Hall.

South Ribble Labour leader, Coun Paul Foster, said: “I’m delighted that at long last we are now seeing investment in the areas of South Ribble that really need it the most.”
