Appeal after man, 80, is killed in horror crash

Police are appealing for information after an 80-year-old man died in a road crash near Longridge.

Officers were called to Preston Road in Alston around 4.45pm on Tuesday after reports of an accident involving two vehicles close to the White Bull Pub.

A 25-year-old man from Longridge had been driving a Ford van when it collided with a green car.

The driver of the car, an 80-year-old man from Longridge, suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the van suffered bruising. He was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and possession of a class A drug and is currently in custody.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward following the crash.

Sgt Nigel Ralphson, of Lancashire Police, said: “We are appealing for information following the death of an 80-year-old man in Longridge.

“We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident but did not speak to police. Furthermore, we want to talk to anyone who may have seen either vehicle being driven prior to the collision.”

There was major congestion in the area between Grimsargh and Longridge after the smash The road outside the White Bull was closed until around 9pm while investigation work was carried out.

A spokesman for the pub said the premises had not been open at the time of the crash, and staff struggled to get to work.

He said: “I’ve been here two-and-a-half years and I only know of two accidents happening, both in the last couple of weeks. It’s a straight road and I don’t think it’s known to be dangerous.”
