Irresponsible dog owners have been slammed as “anti-social” for not clearing up after their pets at a popular spot.
The accusation comes from Coppull parish councillor Ken Ball, who says some dog owners are “lazy” when it comes to picking up their mess.
The playing fields next to Springfield Park Leisure Centre, in Springfield Road North, have been identified as a problem area in the village by the parish council.
A children’s play-area is on the land and Coun Ball feels the mess poses a threat to youngsters.
He said: “This problem has been going on for at least four years, it’s not just this area, the whole borough has this problem.
“It’s laziness from dog owners, it seems to happen more in the morning and at night rather than during the day.”
Three years ago, the parish council looked to employ a dog warden to help combat the problem.
However, despite making several approaches to Chorley Council, the appointment never came to fruition.
The parish council has erected a number of signs asking dog owners to pick up their mess, but they have no legal grounds to impose fines.
Coun Ball added: “We as a parish council have done all we can do, we have made calls to Chorley Council but nothing has ever happened.
Coun Adrian Lowe, who is responsible for street cleaning at Chorley Council, said: “Our Don’t Mess with Chorley campaign is currently focussing on the issue of dog fouling which we take extremely seriously and we do issue fixed penalty notices to dog owners who fail to pick up after their pets.
“We regularly patrol in Coppull and we are proactively educating dog owners. However, anyone can report irresponsible dog owners to us in confidence and I would urge them to do so online at chorley.gov.uk or call 01257 515151.”
