Aldi given green light for Garstang store

Wyre Council says a new food store can be built on the former Certas Energy and EMO Oil site off Moss Lane.

Councillors, who made a site visit, were told the development will bring 37 new jobs to the town – 22 full time and 15 part-time posts.

Aldi, which promises “the very latest design features” in its new store, has insisted that it will not be competing directly with other businesses in Garstang.

The EMO site closed in April and the matter was considered by the planning committee at the request of local Coun Tom Balmain.

The application for the development was submitted by development company Morbaine Ltd and Aldi.

A design and access statement in support of the application stressed that Aldi has a distinct offer.

It noted: “As a food store with predominately own labelled brands, Aldi would not compete directly with existing businesses within Garstang. For instance, it does not have an in-store baker, butcher, fishmonger or café and does not sell newspapers magazines, cigarettes or lottery tickets. This allows local businesses to flourish as customers link trips with the Aldi store and other local shops.”

The 2.25 acre development site is adjacent to Booths.

Aldi has promised local contractors and labour will be used in the construction of the store.

Some 13 representations about the application had been received by the council – with five correspondents raising concerns or objections, five supporting the proposal, and three raising no objections subject to certain matters being dealt with.

Those in favour welcomed jobs, a cheaper retail offer, the use of a brownfield site and increased retail competition.

The concerns ranged from noise during demolition, general noise on site, road congestion and pedestrian safety, to fears about spoilt views, light pollution and pressure being placed on “struggling independent shops” and trees being incorrectly identified on plan.

Garstang Chamber of Trade declined to comment saying that there had not yet been time to consult members on their views on the planning decision. Aldi was not available for comment.
