M61 reduced to 1 lane after crash near Chorley

A crash on the M61 has led to delays near Chorley this afternoon (February 8).

The southbound motorway has been reduced to just one lane after the crash at around 11.55am between Chorley and Horwich.

Police are at the scene managing traffic and recovery crews are on their way to clear the damaged vehicles.

It has led to congestion and delays as traffic merges into one lane between junctions 8 (A674 Millennium Way, Chorley) and 6 (A6027 De Havilland Way, Horwich).

Lanes one and two (Of three) are closed, with motorists queuing to join the third lane which is currently gridlocked for around four miles.

Highways say its expects the lanes to reopen by 1pm.

A Highways spokesman said: "The M61 southbound from J8 (Chorley, A674, A6) to Bolton West / Rivington Services (Rivington, Blackrod) has two lanes closed due to a collision.

"Traffic Officers & Lancs Road Police are currently at scene. Recovery are on their way to the area to assist."
