Zumba marathon in Katy’s memory

Hardcore fitness enthusiasts worked out for three hours to raise money in memory of Katy Holmes, who lost her fight against an inoperable brain tumour.

Members of D&T Fitness donned neon gear, tutus and legwarmers for the non-stop exercise regime, including one hour each of Zumba, boxobics and kettlercise, to generate cash in aid of the Katy Holmes Trust, which funds research into paediatric brain tumours.

The charity was founded by Paula and David Holmes after their 10-year-old daughter Katy died of an inoperable brain tumour.

Tracey Cooper, who runs the weekly classes with partner, Dave, organised the 34 gym bunnies at Lea Community Primary School.

She said: “We wanted to do something for charity and get everyone together for a bit of fun and it was for a really good cause.

“It was really funny seeing the men do the Zumba routines and the day was made even more special when Katy’s dad and younger sister came down to see what we were up to.”

As well as the keep-fit, refreshments were also on sale to boost funds as well as a raffle, which raised £170.

And Tracey, who runs the classes four times a week at the school, is hoping to run a similar event soon saying: “We don’t know how much we have raised in total yet as sponsorship is still coming in.

“Hopefully we’ll do another event in summer when we can go outside and do some different exercises.”
