David Pennington and Lisa McDermott’s wedding was 16 years in the making.
The couple, from Chorley, met in 1993, though Lisa, a catering assistant, had known David’s family for some time.
She says, “I’d known David’s family most of my life as I was best friends with his sister when we were younger.
“We only really properly got talking when were in both at the Black Horse in Chorley in May 1993 when he said he would walk me home.”
Four years later, David, a street scene operative, asked Lisa to marry him, but instead of a romantic proposal, he chose an opportune moment next to a hospital bed on February 21, 1997..
“I was giving birth to our second child and David kind of blurted it out,” says Lisa.
“He said, ‘come on, you can do this then we’ll get married’.
“I didn’t actually get a ring until my 21st birthday party at the Gillibrand Arms pub, Chorley, three months later.”
The pair were blessed with two more children so wedding plans were put on hold.
“It was only when we were at our niece’s wedding at Christmas 2013 we said shall we do it?” says Lisa
“As soon as the children heard the excitement took over and we officially booked a date.”
At Devonshire House, on August 15, David and Lisa were married, 21 years after meeting, surrounded by their children, Kelly, 18, Rachel, 17, David, 14, and 12-year-old Jodie.
Lisa walked down the aisle to Bruno Mars’ ‘Marry You’ to inject a bit of fun to proceedings while the bride’s mum and dad had arranged a special surprise for an acoustic singer to serenade them on their arrival at their reception venue, Brook House Hotel, Clayton-le-Woods.
“The day was so magical for us as our children were able to take part,” says Lisa
“We will remember the day forever and being married finally completes our family.”
