Van-tastic way to get away from it all

If you still hold the belief that you have to slum it a bit to go on a caravan holiday, it’s time to think again.

For after spending a weekend in a holiday home at Holgates Caravan Park on the edge of the Lake District, the best word to describe the accommodation is luxurious.

We were staying in a Moselle Lodge, which is a Swift Holiday Home, but quite frankly every model offers great comfort.

There’s remote control central heating and plasma TV screens in the main living area and master bedroom for starters.

And overall, you enjoy a contemporary interior design with class-leading specification and striking exterior looks with full-height glazing.

So the accommodation earns top marks – but what about the site?

There are actually six Holgates Holiday Parks which hug the largely undiscovered coastline of Morecambe Bay.

Some parks are lively with lots of facilities, while others are peaceful where you can truly get away from it all.

We took up residence on the main site found just outside Silverdale, just a few yards over the Cumbrian border.

It has the facilities you may expect – a well-stocked shop, laundrette, bar, games room and cafe/restaurant.

But what really stands out are the magnificent leisure
facilities.

Attached to the main reception, you will find a luxury 17m swimming pool, toddler pool, spa pool, steam room, jacuzzi and sauna.

And then there’s a state-of-the-art fitness suite which offers a full technogym cardio work-out.

Now that’s how to live!

With the accommodation and site passing with flying colours, the third part of the equation for a perfect break is the location.

And again, you couldn’t ask for much more.

This park is on the very southern tip of the Lake District, but it’s only a short drive to tourist destinations like Windermere and a whole host of Wainwright walks.

Alternatively, if the near vicinity, there is the opportunity of going on a tree top trek, nature watching at Leighton Moss or visiting a motor museum or heritage farm.

And we decided to be energetic and hire electric bikes to see the beautiful countryside around Silverdale - and the electric assistance was most welcome on some of the hills!

All in all, Holgates offers a great place to get away from it all, and whether it’s a weekend break or an extended stay, you should never be short of things to do.

n If such a holiday is attractive to you, get yourself down to The Caravan and Motorhome Show at Manchester’s
