Pop-up festival to raise support for Preston's Caribbean Carnival

The city’s Caribbean Carnival is to go back on the road this year with a street procession, which was missing from last year’s event through a lack of cash.

Now organisers are planning a mini event on Saturday to get the word out about June’s celebration, along with workshops during half term at Hobbycraft in Deepdale Shopping Park.

Carol Nevins, treasurer for Preston’s Caribbean Carnival, said Hobbycraft held regular craft activities for the festival, and said: “On Saturday we are going in with about four steel pans and people drumming between 11am and 3pm.

“The steel pans will be playing at regular intervals throughout the time, so that should create a bit of a tension because they are loud.

“They are going to have bunting and crafts going on for children to go and make a flag, cutting out, sticking, and we are hoping to get a large costume piece down there at the front of the store.

“It’s really just to drum up some attention - we are going to have collection buckets if anyone wants to donate - it’s to get people involved making bunting and hopefully people will look at the website and get involved in costume making.”

Workshops will also be held on Wednesday and Thursday next week, with anyone wishing to attend asked to contact [email protected].

Hobbycraft manager Fiona Grayston said the team wanted to help raise the profile of this year’s carnival, due to be held on June 25, and said: “It’s a perfect match with us because for mask making we have got everything, and we thought we would help out.”
