Two building firms have offered to put right for free the roofing “nightmare” which Angela Crossthwaite was left with by a doorstep charmer.

“It has restored my faith in human beings,” said the mother-of-two, who was £600 out of pocket and facing a further £2,000 repair bill after allowing a man working in her neighbourhood to mend two flat roofs on her semi-detached home in Longfield, Fulwood.

“I was at my wits end after what happened with the guy who kept knocking on the door and badgering me to have the job done.

“He left me with a right mess. Now two companies have come forward and offered their services for free to put things right. I can’t thank them enough.

“I had a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes when these two firms offered to repair it. It just shows that there are a lot of very reputable people in the building trade, not just cowboys.”

Angela was duped after a man working locally called to tell her the facia boards on her flat roofs front and rear were in need of replacement. After four separate visits she finally relented and agreed to have the work done.

But instead of doing the facias, the man re-felted the roofs, taking away lead flashing and leaving her with a leak.

“One of the builders who has looked at what he did said it was a terrible job,” said Angela. “He’s going to come round next week and do the thing properly.

“I’m so grateful and there’s absolutely no way I’ll ever employ a cold caller again.”
