Our Lancashire cheese is the best on the board

Lancashire has swept the (cheese) board at an international food awards ceremony.

Dewlay Cheesemakers in Garstang collected gold medals in all Lancashire cheese classes, while Carron Lodge’s unique Inglewhite Buffalo Cheddar claimed the trophy for best speciality cheese.

Upwards of 5,000 cheese were entered into the International Cheese Awards.

Dewlay collected more than 20 medals, including 11 golds for their Creamy, Crumbly and Tasty Lancashire varieties.

Shop manager Laura Barnes said: “Not only do we make great cheese, but with our Cheese Shop, we know what works on a cheese board.”

“Winning the trophy for the best cheeseboard display really does cement our position as experts in offering cheese advice.”

The judges deemed the local company’s Inglewhite Buffalo Cheddar the best speciality cheese as it was awarded the LTS Litman trophy. The smooth and creamy texture of the cheese, made from the milk of Carron Lodge’s own herd of buffalo.

Operations manager Tom Rhodes said: “It’s like the world cup of the cheese industry.

“Winning this award establishes a great foundation for selling our speciality cheese in the future.

It cements the reputation of our Inglewhite Buffalo Cheddar as a high-end cheese coming out of Lancashire,” Mr Rhodes said.

Laura Barnes sees Dewlay’s grand sweep as a victory for the whole community in Garstang, adding she believes their success at the International Cheese Awards will spread the word and further boost the reputation of Lancashire cheese.
