There are times when you know you’ve come across the pub of your dreams. No juke box – or music of any kind actually, slate floors, an old fireplace which turns out to be one of the oldest in the Lake District, and more importantly, brilliant beer.

So here it is. The Manor Arms at Broughton-in-Furness, very possibly the perfect pub. And don’t just take it from me, this is the Cumbria branch of Camra’s pub of the year for 2013. And no flash in the pan, it’s been a winner on numerous occasions before.

Step inside – as many walkers and other visitors to the Lake District do – and it’s not difficult to see why. As well as Yates’ bitter, which maintains a permanent presence, it is possible to try
another six or seven beers on any given visit.

These are constantly changing – and may even be replaced during a session, with yet another delicious option. In fact, it’s a beer festival on every visit!

Husband Bob was so happy with his Yates’ he didn’t think it could be bettered, but I was happy to try a couple of the other offerings. I went for one which I always choose if it is available – Copper Dragon Golden Pippin. This is a wonderful blonde ale, full of fresh citrus and melon flavours. It started as a seasonal ale, but is now so popular, it is brewed all year.

My second choice was a Corby blonde, from Carlisle-based Cumberland Breweries. Again, quite citrussy, with delicate hoppy notes – a lovely light bitter.

The Yates’ is quite a punchy, traditional bitter, and a great session ale as it is not too strong.

The Manor Arms is not a food pub, although it is possible to get a sausage butty or even a packet of those crackers, cheese triangles and pickles which instantly transport you to your childhood.

But if you are looking for wonderfully-kept, expertly-poured beer in picture perfect surroundings, the Manor Arms takes a lot of beating. Take a trip next time you are in the Lakes.
