This week, our Tried and Tested team get a taste of a new Lancashire delicacy - hand cooked vegetable crisps Roots.

Food shoppers in Preston are among the first to get stuck into a new snack which has got born and bred Lancashire credentials.

Roots Hand Cooked Vegetable Crisps have made their crunchy debut at Booths stores in Lancashire.

The crisps are made from carrots, parsnips and beetroot grown in Lancashire and across the UK by Huntapac - a leading grower and supplier of vegetables which has a rich Lancashire heritage dating back to the Second World War.

Thinly sliced and hand cooked in pure sunflower oil and lightly seasoned with salt, Roots are being stocked in selected Booths stores across Lancashire.

Booths is the first retailer to stock the snack which until now has only been available through wholesalers.

This bolsters Huntapac’s relationship with the leading Northern retailer which it has been supplying with raw vegetables for the last 20 years.

Rachel Alty, account manager at Huntapac, says: “We are very excited to be launching Roots direct to consumers for the very first time and it is a real treat to see them in Booths’ stores.

“Booths has an excellent reputation for supporting local producers and we are pleased to be strengthening our relationship with them.

Huntapac’s Roots Hand Cooked Vegetable Crisps with a pinch of sea salt will be available in 50g bags and will retail at 89p.

They will be stocked in the lunchtime and snack area of Booths stores at stores including Fulwood, Penwortham, Lytham, Garstang, Longton and Hesketh Bank.

The crisps are made from vegetables grown in Lancashire and across the UK.

They are thinly sliced and cooked by hand in pure sunflower oil for a super crunchy texture before being seasoned lightly with salt.

No artificial colourings, flavourings, preservatives or other additives are used.

Huntapac has supplied vegetables to Booths for more than 20 years. They supply carrots and parsnips as well as turnips, Chantenay carrots and mixed punnets of prepared carrots, cauliflower and broccoli.

Based in the village of Tarleton in Lancashire, Huntapac was founded by the Hunter family in 1942 in the midst of the Second World War.

THESE brightly coloured crisps initially reminded our Tried and Tested team of pot pourri.

But on trying this mixture of carrot, parsnip and beetroot vegetable crisps with a pinch of sea salt, our testers were pleasantly surprised to find them rich in flavour and very enjoyable.

The flavours of the vegetables really come through and there is a lovely sweet taste with every bite.

The beetroot crisps in particular have a great strong flavour as well as a dark colour.

Our team liked the vivid colours of these crisps and felt the different taste and texture made a nice change from potato crisps.

However, one salt lover said they would have preferred them to be a bit saltier while another tester felt that some of the vegetable crisps were a bit soggy and greasy in texture.

One of our testers who loved these crisps told us that his wife had trouble persuading him to eat up his vegetables and that as he loved crisps, these may well be the answer.

However, anyone thinking that these vegetable crisps are a healthy alternative and part of their five-a-day needs to realise that each 50g pack still contains 251 calories and 17.7g of fat - although only 2g of this is saturated.

Overall, our team gave these crisps a resounding thumbs up and felt they were very tasty, pleasant and unusual ... but in a good way.
